CZECH JAZZ CONTEST 2012

Application

• The application to the contest is free and has to be done by February 14th 2012
• In order to be admitted it is necessary to send an mp3 file to the e-mail address contest@czechjazz.org  The mp3 file must contain one obligatory standard, one blues and one free choice piece of music
• Each applicant has to send following information:
  1. name of the band,
  2. names of all the band members with dates of birth,
  3. list of all instruments,
  4. a contact phone number.
• The deadline for the registration and the mp3 file sending is fixed on February 14th 2012.
• The competition is open for young musicians and vocalists that perform in Czech Republic or Slovakia and bands whose members are less than 30 years old. The average age of the group’s components must be within 26 years old.

Competition

The competition consists of 3 phases:

1) Pre-selection

On the basis of mp3 files, the commission will select the bands which will perform during the second phase.

2) Live selections

The pre-selected bands will be put in a live concerts selection schedule subdivided in eight nights (see PROGRAM). Each participant will perform 45 – 60 minutes and each performance will be subject to the judgment of an artistic commission.

3) Finals

The commission will evaluate all participants and choose the winner of the competition. The commission may award the most outstanding soloist, the best original composition or the best instrumental arrangement as well.

Commission consists of Emil Viklicky, Milan Svoboda, Rostislav Fras, Ondrej Stveracek and others.

Prizes

• The winner will perform at the festival organized by the PRAGOKONCERT agency.
• The winner will receive a scholarship for the SUMMER JAZZ WORKSHOP 2012.
• The best three finalists will receive a voucher worth CZK 20.000 to be spent on musical equipment.
• The best three finalists will be offered to play a concert in Reduta Jazz Club in Prague.
• Each participant will receive a video record of the performance and small presents.

CZECH JAZZ CONTEST builds on the success of the international Junior Jazz Competition – contest with 13-years-old tradition held until year 2009. Among finalists of Junior Jazz Competition are artists such as Quattro Formaggi (CZ), Biotone (PL), Mocca Malacco (CZ), Switch On Quintet (PL), Ring Trio (D), Karel Růžička jr. (CZ), Ondřej Štveráček (CZ) and many others. Members of the jury were famous names of jazz music, such as Elias Bailey (USA), Freddy Cole (USA) or Randy Napoleon (USA). Czech Jazz Contest is a unique gathering of young jazz artists – a project primarily focused on youth and students but at the same time attractive for broad public.

REDUTA JAZZ CLUB is one of the oldest jazz clubs in Europe. Located in the centre of Prague, it has played host to many jazz legends such as Wynton Marsalis, Chris Barber, Duke Ellington Orchestra, Ronnie Scott and others. Reduta Jazz Club has been proud witness of several fabled meetings such as was the evening in 1994 when former president of the USA Bill Clinton actively participated in the traditional jam session.

CZECH JAZZ SOCIETY is a non-profit organization of jazz friends, fans and musicians and organizes educational, competitional and social events connected to jazz music. CJS´s activity is mainly focused on educational activities and information service. One of the most important events is a week-long Summer Jazz Workshop and competition of young jazz talents Junior Jazz.
