40th International Jazz Festival Prague, one of the oldest and most prestigious jazz shows of its kind in Europe and around the world, celebrates this year 40th anniversary jubilee. In the past, we introduced the greatest stars of jazz, blues, swing and dixieland, accounting from Louise Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Benny Goodman and Herbie Hancock to John Scofield and Cecile Taylor with the orchestra. Also this year's festival, which is currently running, traditionally in the jazz arc of Prague - Reduta, offers a variety of great personalities from all continents.
This year´s showcase was already launched by fragile and exquisite Judith Nijland from Holland, who - accompanied the top jazzmen from Bohemia - reminded of the Wes Montgomery magical world. Purely original music inspired by Ecuador and Cuba was offered by pianist "Aru" Andrea Ruilova Barzola and her Folhinha Band.
In addition to breathtaking domestic virtuoso Charie Slavík on bluesharp, we chanced to experience the magnificent Steve Clark with his trio, playing everything from bebop through smooth jazz to electronics. Unforgettable Adriano Trindade from Brazil with Antonio Jobim moods combining the fiery southern flames.
Italian modern swing of world known pianist Robert Magris as well as the symbiosis of jazz and soul by the French-Czech Hermes Karl Quartet also graced the historical stage of Reduta.
And yet to come?
From far Indonesia comes as a blueberry ripe and charming Dian Pratiwi.
Reggae, latin and afrojazz will offer the very unique - brazilian duo Alexandre Santos / Leonard Barbosa.
The same evening, the stage shall be „attacked“ by jazz artists from all over Europe, from Russia to Serbia and Germany, and a total of forty-strong big band under the baton of Uwe Plath.
British tenors axophone forntman (and sideman for Van Morrison), applauded by New York City's Birdland and Blue Note audiences, Alex Garnett And His Quartet - another of the festival's rare guests, just like the Federico Monetta Quartet, lyrical jazz inspired by the beauty of the Alpine lakes.
Grammy winner and member of The Mingus Big Band - Wayne Escoffery, one of Australia's most famous jazz divas Michelle Nicolle with her quartet, earthy chicago blues by Rene Trossman, Kajetan Borowski Trio from Poland and Rachel Luz from Brazil are among the world's other jazz stars who have received an invitation to the 40th International Jazz Festival Prague for the landmarking concerts for everyone who visits these days Bohemia´s capital city, the mystical cradle of Europe.
